serramar is a multi-channel audiovisual installation set in a region between the mountains and the sea. It explores the community’s ways of life and the knowledge accumulated and transmitted across generations. Developed through an extended residency, the work captures three enduring traditions that have sustained and continue to shape this place.

These include Arte Xávega, a traditional fishing practice rooted in Arab and Mediterranean cultures; Fogaça, a bread with a 500-year history originating from a vow made during an epidemic; and a method of mushroom cultivation attuned to the rhythms of space and time. Formed under different conditions, these practices persist today in sustained or transformed forms.

Central to the work is not the activities themselves but the rhythms they produce. Whether human or mechanical, rhythm structures the moving image. serramar brings these distinct rhythms into coexist- ence within a shared space, without dissolving their individual textures.

The installation comprises three videos, each dedicated to one of these practices.

Arte Xávega: A traditional fishing method believed to have been introduced to the Portuguese coast by Catalan fishermen in the 18th century. Divided into “people of the sea” and “people of the land,” fishermen work in a coordinated, almost choreographic rhythm. Once reliant on human and animal strength, it now incorporates mechanical assistance, while facing challenges such as overfishing and environmental degradation.

Fogaça (500-year-old Bread): Originating in 1505 during a plague outbreak, Fogaça was offered to Saint Sebastian in a vow for the community’s survival. It symbolizes gratitude, faith, tradition, and resilience. Its form references the towers of the local castle and remains part of everyday life.

Mushrooms: Cultivated on a wooden structure designed by a solitary grower, mushrooms develop in relation to their environment. The work shifts focus from the organism itself to the surrounding ecolo- gy, revealing invisible connections among humans, insects, animals, and water.

This project was first presented in April 2025 at the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira.
